Why this, not something else

We tested 12 travel bags: hard-shell carry-ons, soft carry-ons, one-wheels, and traditional backpacks. The Allpa 38L is not the most feature-rich bag. It's not the cheapest. It's the one that checks the most boxes without having a single dealbreaker.

What we tested

• Carry-on compliance across airlines (checked dimensions at 9 major carriers)
• Sub-seal testing (fits under seat when overpacked)
• Hip belt comfort on 8-mile days with a loaded pack
• Weather resistance (simulated rain, 2hr exposure)
• YKK zippers under repeated stress

What we rejected

The Peak Design 45L is the best-designed bag we tested — better organization, better laptop access, better build quality. It's $280 and the hip belt is sold separately. The Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 is exceptional but carries like a duffel bag. The Osprey Farpoint 40 is the right answer for tight budgets — it's fine, not great.

The one-bag philosophy

Meridian believes in carrying less. The Allpa's 38L encourages you to pack for 5-7 days without checking. If you need more than that, you're traveling wrong — or you're the person who checks a bag and waits 40 minutes for it. We're not here to judge. But we are here to recommend the better approach.
