Why this, not something else

The specialty coffee world loves to complicate things. We tested pour-over setups, the Fellow Stagg EKG, several espresso machines, and a range of drip makers. The answer that satisfied the most people — across a range of bean quality and grind sizes — was theOXO Brew 9 Cup.

What we tested

• Temperature stability over 20 consecutive brews (target: 195-205°F within 30 seconds of bloom)
• Extraction quality via refractometer (TDS measurement)
• Cleanup time and frequency
• Day-one vs. day-180 brew consistency

What we rejected

The Bonavita 1800 is nearly identical and cheaper, but the carafe thermal performance degrades faster. The Moccamaster is the right answer for heavy-use offices — overkill for a home that drinks 2-3 cups per day. The Breville precision is outstanding but at $400, it's paying for a barista school education you won't use.

The pour-over case

If you want to learn and iterate: buy a V60, a Fellow scale, and a Baratza Encore. But the OXO gets you 90% of the quality with 10% of the effort. Most mornings, that's the right trade.
