Why this, not something else

We tested 47 fans across three categories: tower, oscillating, and conventional. Most tower fans move air three feet and call it a day. The Vornado 660 uses Vortec technology — the same principle that makes a jet engine efficient — to actually circulate air throughout a 200sqft room.

What we tested

• Airflow velocity at 10ft (the real test — not the "we tested 40 units" kind)
• Noise at low/medium/high (dB meter, not our ear)
• Energy draw at full load
• Durability: 6-month continuous run test on 8 candidates

What we rejected

The Dysons are gorgeous and terrible at moving air. The Lasko is cheap and noisy. The Honeywell is fine and somehow costs $120 — we couldn't find a reason for the premium. The Vornado 660 at $80 outperforms all of them.

Why we didn't pick cheaper

Budget fans ($25-40) fail the longevity test. The motor burns out in 12-18 months under daily use. The Vornado's build quality justifies the price differential — it's a 5-year purchase, not a 1-year one.

Cost per use

$79.99 / 1,825 days = $0.044/day. For comparison, a $35 budget fan lasting 400 days costs $0.088/day — twice as much per day, with worse air circulation.
